KPissed raged 1 month ago —— Lately, we have been under attack by a mild infestation of cereal moths.

These insidious little fuck-bugs get into any kind of cereal. They also like crackers, breadcrumbs, pasta, chips, noodles, rice, bird seed, dry cat food - anything made of grain. And they somehow cunningly manage to get into closed Tupperware, Rubbermaid and Zip Lock bags too, and even eat holes in unopened stuff in cardboard boxes.

But that is not the worst of the damage these tiny terrors leave in their wake of destruction.

Recently, the stereo went on the fritz. When I opened the back panel - you know, the one that says "No User Servicable Parts Inside" - I discovered the mini monsters need a place to live too. And a place to breed.

I have also discovered that they probably got into the house in some bird seed I got when someone gave us a parakeet they could not keep any longer. However they got in, I am finding it next to impossible to get them out.

If anyone out there knows how to make these bugs begone, I'd like to know. Before I end up either in the poor house from throwing food out, or at the gym for eight hours straight from trying to eat the food before they get to it.

KPissed - Who still can't find a way to get rid of these flying fuckwads, even after singing the song the tiny Japanese twins sang in Mothra over a dozen times.

A lot of grain products....*come with the larvae in it already*!!! Exspecially if you buy clearance flour, cake mixes, etc....or as you did, bird seed. They're called, "mealy moths / Mealy worms. Years ago, I bought this little round box that you set in your cupboards, and it gave off something that repelled them. Sorry I don't remember what it was. You could try putting a few moth balls in a baby food jar, cap it, poke a few holes in the lid, and set around. It works for other flying insects, maybe it will work for them

Thank you Arenaria. I will try the mothball jar thing. Just have to remember to punch holes in the lid, not in the glass part of the jar.

You've also given me a good idea. About something unpleasant that repells moths, or even people. Now if I could just get my fucking brain dead cocksucker of a brother-in-law into the cabinets - without him eating all the cereal.

    Thanks again.

KPissed - Who thinks having my brother-in-law sitting in a cabinet, holding a jar full of mothballs (with or without holes punched in the lid) might just drive away not only the moths, but everyone else. Who can say?

Tried getting a pair of scissors and just snipping them?

An anesthesia-infused surgery would be far less painful, but you seem quite diligent.

Say "just eat and shut up", are you by any chance Manonymous? Hmmm?

KPissed - Who wonders what happened to Manonymous, but thinks he couldn't get his new password when the site changed. It's a shame, but the public library just won't allow pedophiles to use the internet these days.

They are Indian Meal Moths. They eat all sorts of seeds and dried fruits. The seeds include nuts, spices, grains & things made from them, cocoa and chocolate.

Once infested it is a massive pain in the butt to recover. Usually I have found there will be one item with lots that can be removed. Get it out of the house. You need to thoroughly clean out your food storage areas. Look at everything. Toss anything with bugs look closely for webbing or larvae. Things can be kept in glass jars with rubber on them where the rim meets lid-- like spaghetti sauce jars.

They make webby cocoons between flaps or in corners like under a shelf where it meets the wall. Eliminate any you can find. Look and wipe along the corner where ceilings meet walls.

Safe ways to keep or treat food so it will still be edible are: Freeze flours two days to kill eggs. Put a few bay leaves in the bottom of your flour canister to deter them.

If you want to keep foods that have been opened -- bake cereals, crackers or chips briefly, then seal in ziplocks, glass jars, or metal cans with tight lids. Things like chocolate & nuts should be kept in the fridge or freezer once unsealed.

    Good luck.
