decay raged 1 year ago ——

I got into a very long winded discussion with one of my gay buddies over the whole gay marriage / civic unions ordeal this weekend and was confused and annoyed with his reasoning about why being able to be gay married is more important than being able to get civic unions.

His stance was that gay/lesbians/blablalba should have the right to being married regardless of their sexual preference. And that it was a religious manner not a political problem and that even if civil unions granted all the same exact features, bonuses and everything that being married to someone offered that it wouldn’t be the same.

This just seems fucking stupid to me.  Now I love the gays and all my GLBT friends (in a non-poke me with your sexual bits way) but it really seems like most people fighting for gay marriage have forgotten what this whole fight was able and are now trying to get the right to have religious groups see unions of the same gender as acceptable, which really you crazy homosexuals will never get.  Religious people don’t like you and your just going to have to deal with that.

What I have personally believed in is that the whole CONCEPT of marriage has taken over what a union between two people really is.  The term Kleenex being used as a term for all facial tissues is the best example I can think of.  Marriage is just the branding that people now use as the term of a civic union.  That and the tem just flows off the tongue and just has a better sound to it.

Let people who enjoy humping people of the same sex get civil unions, which is the same thing as marriage minus the whole religious part of it.  Hell everyone who gets married goes through all the paper work of a civic union and then use the marriage as the religious ceremony to join themselves under whatever stupid god they worship.

To all the gay folks who are pushing for gay marriage.  As much as you might enjoy it you need to pull your head out of your ass and change your strategy. Go for equal rights, not religious acceptance.  Push for allowing gay unions and be happy with that, because all this marriage bullshit is between you and religious groups and will never solve the political problem you are fighting against.

Nah, I've just be so damn busy with work stuff I have had zero time for much of anything. I am also working on the new servers I bought for justrage and my other sites so hopefully in a few weeks I'll have everything moved over on to some nice fancy new machines.

Forcing religion to accept gay marriage will be more difficult than it was getting them to admit they had pedophiles molesting children for years upon years. You are absolutely correct in that they should push for equal rights. Religious recognition is meaningless and would be an empty victory.

getting married was all to do with showing God and your family/community your commitment to each other. If gays are not religious like you stated and I know a majority of them are not, they shouldn't give a fuck about getting married. They are together everyday, they don't need to stand up in front of God..especially if they dont beleive in him to prove they love each other.

I personaly think anyone should get married to whoever the fuck they want...but then again, I can't say that. what if a pedophile wanted to marry a 6 year old girl? A lot of people would find that wrong..(I hope) So I can kind of see why people get angry when gays want to marry. Women and men... well they were made for each other really wern't they?

ahhh fuck it, I don't know.

    Live and let die.

The whole stigma of gay marriage stems from tribal culture. When there were much less of us around tribes needed increases in population to exist. If they allowed gay activity or marriage it would threaten the existence of the tribe. All throughout the bible there is nothing but tribes. Tribes were the first cities of civilization. Even now a decrease in the population of a city is seen as a very bad thing.

    That's because numbers are powerful.

Some groups are too fucking powerful today if you ask me, they will ignore and go through other groups that need help.

But that's just the way it is. So gays.. are the "underdogs" if you like. Why do they insist on seeking the approval of the majority? They shouldn't give a fuck. they are together, they should just be happy.

Oh my, the first rage decay has ever posted that I disagree with.

The main problem with this rage is that there is absolutely nothing religious about a marriage. Christians love to call it a "religious institution" and all of this bullshit simply because it's defined in the Bible but many don't know the word marriage has existed *long* before the Bible. The word marriage dates back to B.C. and has existed since the beginning of time for all we know, and definitions that old don't even mention strictly man and woman relationships. Christianity obviously has only been around for about 2,000 years.

If certain religious groups don't want to marry or accept unions of the same gender as acceptable, the answer is a simple "then don't". They shouldn't be forced to accept gay unions, but they have no need to undermine gay people that want a marriage because they don't believe in your book.

Also, if we say marriage was a religious institution, then that is an example of not separating church and state and thus marriages shouldn't be recognized by the government in the first place.

I've been looking into all the shit you have to go though to get married over the last few weeks (and to marry people). No I'm not getting married but I am an ordained minister and will be marrying two friends in a few months,

2 people are married once their marriage license has been processed and accepted. You can technically start receiving the bonuses that being married offers on the day they are accepted (signed by the sect of state/city/whatever). The marriage is simply the process people use to signify their union for themselves, friends/family and what ever religious mumbo jumbo they follow.

This is why you can be married by a judge and other random folks (captains and who ever) that do not have a license to marry a couple into a specific religion.

That being said my main point is that "marriage" is really just a brand name used these days to join two people into a civil union but includes all the religious hooky that gay/lesibian folks should not be focusing their time on. Instead what they should do is skip all the religious shit and simply go after right for civil unions between same sex marriages and then go after the equal rights of a marriage and civic union for same sex marriages.

It would be a much better choice with less resistance since so many religious groups are against marriage but "don't have a problem with teh gays". This really would make everyone happy. The gays get all the equal rights they should have, the religious people can keep the gays out of their marriage and this whole retarded fight could be dropped.

      No, it wasn't.

Marriage is defined by some to be a religious institution. My very valid point is that marriage is not based on religion, and if it were the government shouldn't recognize it to keep separation between church and state.

While civil unions can provide the same rights as marriage, it's called "separate but equal".

The problem is that you're viewing marriage like how many people see it and how the religious folks keep trying to play it off as.

You can't simply get married. You can't just show up to a church and have a paster marry you and poof your married. There is a long annoying process to it, with the final step being the marriage ceremony (Ceremony being the key word here).

You can get married first but the marriage does not validate the union between two people. The process includes both parties submitting their information for a license to be married to their state. The pastor or person who will be providing over the marriage ceremony has to submit their information to the state as well (mostly to validate they are in good standing with their religious sect). Once the paper work is accept you are officially joined in a union with one another. You can then have the religious ceremony to be joined with one another in marriage which really only makes you a part of which ever religion you are married under.

So you can do the paper work and be have a legal union with someone, but you cannot get married and skip the paper work, because the paper work is what creates the union, the marriage is only the religious parade that is held.
